Mapping residual chlorine in water supply network of Babile Town in East Hararge Zone of Oromia Regional State using WaterGEMS

Abstract

Chlorine concentration in water supply distribution network is vital for controlling the health and growth of pathogen organisms at the supply nodes for the users of the distribution system. This study was focused on the evaluation of the hydraulic effect on residual chlorine in the water distribution network of Babile town using waterGEMS integrated arcmap software. Three water pipe system pressure junctions were measured systematically for model calibration purposes, and the results showed that R 2 = 0.9993 linear dependence for field and simulation data The nodal pressure result showed that the optimal 62% was below the minimum requirement of 30% and above the maximum criteria of 8% for the peak demand period.. At a low consumption period, it satisfied 69% and was above the maximum guideline of 31% of junction pressure for pipe network system. According to the results of the velocity computation, 32% and 11% of the water pipes, respectively, were kept up to the hydraulic design standard during periods of high and low use. In a similar vein, certain water pipes had velocities of 58% and 89%, which were below the minimum suggested velocity principle. The simulation result indicated that 47% and 21% of of water pipe comprised optimal residual chlorine for peak and low water demand times. At the same period, about 53% and 79% of water pipes contained residual chlorine that did not meet the WHO standard. The model velocity had a direct effect on the residual chlorine in the water pipe network system. In this case, it is important to raise the chlorine dosage water application and revise the designed network system for sustainable water service, indentify residual chlorine level for home water.
