Maintenance is a critical activity for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of equipment and systems in a variety of industries. There are many different types of maintenance strategies and procedures available, each with its own benefits and trade-offs. This study provides a comprehensive introduction to the various types of maintenance strategies, including corrective, preventive, predictive and condition-based and their associated procedures It explores the benefits and challenges of each approach, as well as the tools and techniques used to plan, execute, and track maintenance activities. A review on the importance of maintenance planning and scheduling, was also carried out. The history of maintenance is important as it aids in understanding the reason for such maintenance strategy, and when to effectively utilize them. A historical background review was carried out which showed how maintenance evolved from pre-world War II to post-World War II. Due to increase in technology, there has been a great advancement in maintenance procedures and practice, therefore different modern technology and analysis were considered. Finally, different failure mechanisms were analysed in order to know their causes and detection.
