LiDAR: Digitalization of Urban Infrastructure Monitoring

Abstract

This study employed bibliometric analysis to investigate the evolution of LiDAR (Light detection and ranging) as an urban infrastructure monitoring tool over the past decade. Using research articles sourced from Dimensions app, the study aims to identify trends in LiDAR utilization, publication rates, research areas, prolific researchers, geographic distribution, and potential future research directions. The results of the study show that there were 76,861 articles published during the period 2014–2024. The year 2023 was the most productive year. Meanwhile, based on VOSviewer app, LiDAR's versatility has enabled its use in various areas, including building inspection, transportation infrastructure, and traffic analysis. Engineering is the major research area using LiDAR, with 22,256 articles. Albert Ansmann, a scientist from German, is the most prolific researcher over the past decade, having published 100 research articles in the field of LiDAR.
