Leveraging City Information Modeling (CIM) and GIS for Sustainable Road Infrastructure

Abstract

This chapter presents a digitally integrated methodology for the planning, design, and cost estimation of a critical road infrastructure project in Mfou, Cameroon, supporting a major social housing initiative by the Société Immobilière du Cameroun (SIC). The chapter details the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and City Information Modeling (CIM) to develop a digital twin of the access road, incorporating topography, utility networks, road geometry, and planning constraints. Through the combined use of Autodesk InfraWorks, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Primavera P6, the project is modeled in 3D, scheduled in 4D, and financially assessed in 5D, with costs estimated at 408,361,987 FCFA. The chapter highlights the benefits of BIM–GIS integration, including enhanced data accuracy, improved interprofessional collaboration, real-time stakeholder engagement, and significant time and cost efficiencies compared to traditional methods. It proposes a scalable approach to digital transformation in infrastructure development for emerging regions.
