Leveraging AI and Industry 4.0 in Aircraft Maintenance: Addressing Challenges and Improving Efficiency

20243 citationsMohammed V University

Abstract

The aviation industry, known for its complexity and stringent regulations, faces significant challenges in aircraft maintenance, which consumes a considerable portion of operational expenses. With the emergence of Industry 4.0 technologies, including autonomous robots, augmented reality, big data analytics, and more, there is a potential for transformative change in aircraft maintenance practices. However, the maturity and readiness of these technologies for implementation in the aviation sector remain a concern. This paper comprehensively examines the intersection of Industry 4.0, Technology Readiness Level (TRL), and aircraft maintenance practices. Through a systematic literature review from 2018 to 2023, the study analyzes the maturity levels of Industry 4.0 technologies in aviation maintenance, shedding light on their applications, challenges, and prospects. The findings reveal that technologies such as Augmented Reality, Additive Manufacturing, and Machine Learning are gaining prominence in aircraft maintenance, with many initiatives focusing on their development and integration. However, most of these technologies are pre-production, indicating ongoing research efforts and investment interests. This study provides crucial insights for researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals by classifying technologies based on their maturity levels and exploring their applications. It underscores the necessity for continuous exploration and implementation of emerging technologies in aircraft maintenance, emphasizing collaboration between stakeholders to realize the full potential of Industry 4.0. Ultimately, this research aims to pave the way for innovative, efficient, and technologically advanced practices in aircraft maintenance, promising a future where maintenance processes are safer, cost-effective, and more sustainable.
