Level of Job Satisfaction Amongst Employees of a South African University

Abstract

Job satisfaction is a critical determinant of employee performance, retention, and overall institutional effectiveness within higher education. This study examines the level of job satisfaction amongst employees at a South African university, with the aim of identifying key factors influencing satisfaction across academic and non-academic staff. A quantitative research methodology was employed, to gain a comprehensive understanding of employee perceptions. A convenient sample size of (114) was utilised in the execution of this study. The sample was drawn from both administrative and academic staff of the institution. Data were collected with the aid of a job satisfaction questionnaire. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 26. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics specifically the chi-square method of analysis were used to analyse data. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by the Cronbach Alpha. Results of the study shows that employees are generally committed to work for the university under study. The study highlights the importance of effective management communication, fair reward systems, and professional development initiatives in enhancing satisfaction levels. Recommendations are provided for university leadership to foster a more supportive and motivating work environment.
