Left Atrial Myxoma with Mitral Obstruction, Cerebral Infarcts, and Coexisting Planum Sphenoidale Meningioma: A Case Report

A bstract Cardiac myxomas are rare benign tumors found predominantly in the left atrium and in females. Here, we report a case of left atrial myxoma and rare co-occurrence with brain meningioma complicated by mitral valve obstruction, brain infarcts, and mass effect of the tumor. A 48-year-old woman presented with clinical features of stroke and subsequently developed generalized body weakness, exertional dyspnea, and episodes of syncope. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed multifocal infarcts in the brain and meningioma affecting the optic chiasm. Echocardiography revealed a left atrial myxoma, 2.7 cm × 2.0 cm, with a ball valve effect on the mitral valve. She was managed conservatively but deteriorated and died while awaiting open-heart surgery for excision of the myxoma. Co-occurrence of cardiac myxoma and cerebral meningioma is very rare. Complications from the combined effects of both tumors could be averted by timely diagnosis and surgical treatment for better outcomes.
