Late Quaternary record of 100 ka depositional cycles on the Larache shelf (NW Morocco)

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the stratigraphic architecture of the Upper Pleistocene on the Larache margin, NW Moroccan Atlantic, focusing on the impact of glacio-eustatic cycles. Utilizing seismic analysis, we identified four major seismic sequences (UD, UC, UB, UA) over the past 500,000 years, influenced predominantly by ∼100,000-year Milankovitch cycles. These sequences are delimited by significant erosional unconformities corresponding to glacial lowstands. Our analysis reveals periods of subsidence and tectonic uplift, affecting sediment deposition and progradation. By correlating seismic units with marine isotope stages, we establish a comprehensive chronostratigraphic framework. This study enhances the geological understanding of the Larache margin by detailing the interactions between tectonic activity, climate changes, and sea-level variations.
