book chapter · Advances in computational intelligence and robotics book series
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in language learning is a rapidly expanding field that has been gaining increasing interest since the 2000s. Despite its numerous advantages, its integration also poses challenges. This chapter explores these issues and emerging trends in language teaching, structured into three distinct sections. The first highlights the potential of AI to develop language skills. The second section examines how AI-based tools enhance the learning experience in terms of motivation, engagement, autonomy, and interactions, while addressing the main pedagogical, technological, and ethical challenges. The final section provides an overview of current research in this innovative field, presenting recent advances in AI-assisted language teaching/learning.
