The objective of this paper is to propose a novel frequency-reconfigurable UWB (Ultra-Wideband) antenna by utilizing metamaterials (Split Ring Resonators) and the Defected Ground Structure (DGS) approach for applications in cognitive radio. We commence by designing a UWB antenna that functions at three specific resonant frequencies: 4.81 GHz, 6.12 GHz, and 9.63 GHz, achieving optimal S11 levels at -54.21 dB, -23.91 dB, and -47.88 dB, respectively. This UWB antenna offers a wide bandwidth ranging from 3.95 GHz to 12 GHz, with an average gain of 3 dBi. Following this, we incorporate reconfigurability features to expand the number of resonant frequencies, making it suitable for cognitive radio applications. The results of this study are based on simulations carried out in CST MWS, and we further validate these findings using HFSS software.
