Industry 4.0 and Sustainability

Abstract

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) is transforming business operations and emerging as a key enabler of sustainability across sectors. This chapter explores how technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, big data, and machine learning foster sustainable models by improving resource efficiency, minimizing waste, and enhancing energy use. Through a conceptual literature review, it examines digital transformation's role in circular economy practices, predictive maintenance, real-time environmental monitoring, and supply chain optimization. Drawing on examples from manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and energy, the chapter highlights the tangible sustainability impacts of these innovations. It also addresses ethical and strategic concerns including data governance, green innovation, and regulatory compliance. Emphasizing the need for leadership, cross-sector collaboration, and supportive policies, the analysis shows how Industry 4.0 can advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals and inclusive long-term growth.
