article · Cogent Education
As the world faces growing environmental and social challenges, it is clear that education, especially in the early years, has a powerful role to play in shaping a more sustainable future. This conceptual paper introduces Renewable Rangers, a playful, culturally rooted digital game designed for children aged 5 to 6 in South Africa’s Grade R. Rather than focusing solely on STEM content, Renewable Rangers invites young learners to explore science through stories, games, and experiences that reflect their own communities, languages, and heritage. Guided by the framework of Culturally Responsive Educational Sustainability and inspired by philosophies like Ubuntu, the game blends environmental education with local knowledge, encouraging children to see themselves as capable problem-solvers and active citizens. At its heart, this paper advocates for early childhood STEM education that is joyful, inclusive, and deeply grounded in children’s real-world experiences, nurturing not only knowledge, but also identity, empathy, and a lifelong sense of responsibility for people and the planet.
