One promising technique for producing energy that is both efficient and pure is hydrogen fuel cells. The shift from centralized to distributed power generation, coupled with the pressing need to address energy shortages and achieve sustainability goals, is driving increased interest in microgrid systems among governments, developers, and other stakeholders. The principles of hydrogen fuel cell are summarized in this thorough review. The types, advantages, challenges, future directions of fuel cells powered by hydrogen are discussed in this paper. Among several fuel cell types incorporated in the review are solid oxide, fuel cells using alkaline, phosphoric, and proton swapping membranes, including absence of emissions, high efficiency, and reliability, are highlighted. Furthermore, the challenges facing broad use of hydrogen batteries for fuel, including high cost, generation of hydrogen, infrastructure, likewise durability, are also discussed. Key areas for future research and development have been outlined, encompassing cost reduction, hydrogen production, infrastructure expansion, and advancements in materials science. This review examines fuel cell technology, an environmentally friendly and highly efficient method of electricity generation that harnesses the energy potential of hydrogen or alternative fuels. When hydrogen is used as fuel, fuel cells produce electricity while emitting only water, heat, and power as by-products, offering a clean and sustainable energy solution. In the future hydrogen economy, fuel cells are anticipated to be dependable, quiet, and safe energy sources. This review offers an in-depth analysis of hydrogen-powered fuel cells and their crucial role in advancing the transition to a carbon-free economy.
