Abstract

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a supraventricular tachyarrhythmia characterised by uncoordinated atrial activation and consequent atrial mechanical function deterioration. AF has been shown to pose a serious negative consequence on health as it is inextricably linked with stroke, heart failure and other morbidities. In addition, according to the global burden of disease, there has been an increase in morbidity and mortality related to AF, especially in SSA. There is limited data on the frequency of AF in the hospital population in Nigeria. Aim: The aim of the study is to estimate the frequency of AF in hospital patients at the University College Hospital Ibadan. Method: We studied all 12 lead ECGs performed on adult patients aged 18 years and beyond at the UCH Ibadan from January 1, 2023, to June 30, 2023 (6 months). Diagnosis of AF was based on standard criteria. Results: During this period, 1731 hospital patients performed 12 lead ECGs. After excluding ECGs in those below 18 years, repeated measurements, and those with poor quality, 1678 tracings were analysed using a standard proforma. There were 701 males (41.8%) and 977 females (58.2%). The mean age of the total population was 51.46 ± 15.15 years (Range =18 -97 years). There were 30 cases of AF (1.8%) comprising 16 males (53.3%) and 14 females (46.7%) representing about 18/1000 patients. AF increases with age. Conclusions: AF occurs in 1.8% of adult hospital patients at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria. The frequency increases with age. The rate is lower than what is reported in hospitals in developed countries.
