Harnessing Fatty Acid By‐Products for Diabetes Management: Insights From Nutritional and Biological Research

Abstract

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus (DM), influenced by multifaceted factors, creates a complex imbalance within the body. Nutrition plays a pivotal role in its development, influenced by various factors such as age, health status, location, and cultural practices. Health professionals emphasize the importance of a well‐balanced diet mitigates the risk of various pathologies, including diabetes. This paper provides a comprehensive review of bioactive fatty acids and their potential antidiabetic effects. Short‐, medium‐ and long‐chain fatty acids have shown remarkable ability to reduce hyperlipidemia through mechanisms at the subcellular, cellular, and molecular levels. Recent studies highlight the significant properties of these natural molecules, emphasizing their potential in managing diabetes and preventing diabetogenesis by controlling major risk factors. Incorporating these dietary sources may offer a preventive approach to diabetes. Further investigations are necessary to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying their antidiabetic effects. This review underscores the promising potential of bioactive fatty acids from agro‐industrial by‐products as a viable avenue for managing diabetes, with the aim of developing targeted interventions for optimized utilization and therapeutic benefits.
