Haematological and histopathological alterations of liver and kidney induced by cypermethrin and protective role of vitamin C in male rats

Abstract

Cypermethrin induces toxicity at various levels which ranging from anatomical to biochemical and molecular ones. Vitamin C serves to be a crucial intracellular antioxidant which mitigates toxicity of insecticides. This study was conducted to explore the role of vitamin C (vit. C) as an antioxidant in mitigating the potential toxicity of cypermethrin (CYP) by using 40 adult male rats separated into 4 equal groups: the first group is a control group which orally received distilled water only, while the second group was administered vitamin C solution (200 mg/kg) dissolving in distilled water. The third group is the cypermethrin group which was administrated a dose of 12 mg/kg b.w. The fourth group was used to examine the impact of combination of cypermethrin (12 mg/kg with Vit. C (200 mg/kg b.w).The results showed that exposure to cypermethrin affected significantly on some hematological indices, serum globulin, albumin, total protein and total bilirubin. Also, Ca, Mg, K, ATPase activity and histological alteration in liver and kidney were studied. Administration of vitamin C with cypermethrin showed marked recovery in the liver and kidney structures and serum measured parameters against cypermethrin induced toxicity. Also, the potential mechanism underlying the hepatoprotective effect of vitamin C that acts as potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger.
