GPX-S: A Tool for Accessing Refinery Wastewater Biodegradability

Abstract

The appropriate handling and elimination of wastewater produced during refinery operations is a critical environmental issue. The biological simulator GPX-S has been effectively used in this study to assess the biodegradability of wastewater from refineries. GPX-S utilises a thorough evaluation methodology that takes into account multiple physicochemical characteristics and microbiological markers. The biological simulator is used to simulate the behaviour of actual wastewater treatment system components in order to accomplish this. There are five physiochemical characteristics that are accessed: pH, temperature, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and biological oxygen demand (BOD). The treated effluent water sample had the following parameters: pH of 7.1, temperature of 26.6 °C, COD of 32.59 mg/L, TSS of 0.004816 mg/L, and BOD of 9.959 mg/L, in that order. The findings demonstrate a high level of compliance with the WHO guidelines for acceptable wastewater disposal limits.
