Global Burden of Malaria in the 21st Century

Abstract

Malaria continues to be a significant global health challenge in the 21st century, disproportionately impacting populations in the Global South. This chapter “Global Burden of Malaria in the 21st Century” provides a comprehensive overview of malaria's epidemiology, socio-economic impact, and the evolving challenges in control efforts. The discussion covers current trends in incidence and mortality, highlights regional disparities, and examines the intricate interplay of biological, environmental, and social factors that drive transmission. This chapter examines the ways in which drug and insecticide resistance, climate change, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure are transforming malaria patterns. Ultimately, it highlights the importance of policy intervention and research, particularly regarding the development of natural antimalarial drug research platforms in endemic countries. By placing malaria within a multidisciplinary framework, we aim to guide and promote efforts to connect the gaps between burden, innovation, and justice solutions in the Global South.
