Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is evolving. Devices are no longer limited to sensing and reporting. With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (GAI), IoT systems can now create, predict, and adapt. This shift introduces the generative IoT (GIoT). In this article, we introduce the concept of GIoT. We explore how GAI models—such as variational autoencoders, generative adversarial networks, flow-based generative models, and generative diffusion models—enhance IoT in vision, audio, and text-based applications. These models allow devices to understand context, generate content, and make smarter decisions. We also identify major challenges. These include resource limits on edge devices, dynamic network behavior, and data security risks. Finally, we suggest directions for future work to build reliable, efficient, and secure GIoT systems. GIoT has the potential to change how IoT devices operate. This article lays the foundation for that transformation.
