The study focused on gear failures and economic effect on the overall production of a machine. First, a general failure review was carried out on how gears fail i.e. failure due to thermal effect and failure due to fatigue. Findings show that thermal effect causes crack initiation on the gear material, leading to subsequent crack propagation in the gear and an eventual failure of the component. Thus, it is recommended for material scientists and gear experts to imbibe in effective gear design for operational efficiency.
