Future of Libraries: Skills and Competencies Essential for Sustainability of Library and Information Science Profession in Nigeria

Abstract

The library and information science (LIS) field in Nigeria is experiencing a major change as a result of progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital advancements. This research examines the crucial skills and competencies necessary for librarians to adjust to the changing digital environment and maintain the LIS profession. It emphasizes the incorporation of new technologies like natural language processing (NLP), robotics, and virtual reality (VR) to improve library functions, such as cataloging, indexing, and user services. The study, carried out via a survey of LIS professionals in academic libraries throughout North Central Nigeria, uncovers significant deficiencies in skills related to AI, cloud computing, and data literacy. Results highlight the importance of ongoing professional development and curriculum revisions to include advanced information and communication technology (ICT) skills, ensuring that librarians stay pertinent in the digital era. Moreover, the research highlights the significance of reskilling initiatives to equip LIS professionals for teamwork in data-centric settings within contemporary libraries. To continue their function as knowledge spreaders, librarians need to adopt AI-powered innovations, digital preservation methods, and ethical aspects concerning AI use. The research promotes proactive adaptation and the endorsement of responsible AI utilization in libraries, guaranteeing fair access to information while maintaining professional ethics. Enhancing professional development initiatives and institutional backing will be essential in closing current skill gaps and nurturing a technologically proficient LIS workforce in Nigeria. This study adds to current conversations about the future of libraries by offering practical suggestions for maintaining the LIS profession in the face of swift technological progress.
