Future Directions and Emerging Trends in Surface Engineering of Biomedical Implants

Abstract

Surface engineering of biomedical implants is a developing field that seeks to improve the effectiveness and durability of implants through surface modifications. These changes are intended to enhance biocompatibility, promote tissue integration, and prevent infections, ultimately extending the lifespan of the implant and improving patient outcomes. An emerging trend in this field is the development of intelligent surfaces that can adapt to environmental changes. For example, pH-responsive coatings can automatically release therapeutic agents in response to infections.
