Prof Pi is a mathematics tutoring bot which allows students to use Whatsapp on their personal cell phones and communicate with GPT-4 (the artificial intelligence behind the chatGPT website) in order to receive help with mathematics. Prof Pi is configured or prompted to tutor students in mathematics and not to just simply provide answers to questions. Prof Pi has been deployed in a number of educational projects in Africa in different human languages. By analysing the conversational log data, this paper reports on different types of student users which can be seen using Prof Pi. Understanding these different types of users and their needs have informed future releases of Prof Pi.
