Exploring the Cybersecurity Measures Implemented by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to Mitigate Cyberthreats: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

The occurrence and severity of cyberthreats have surged substantially, leading to damage to individuals, organizations, and society. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) play a crucial role in defending threats through their expertise and robust infrastructure, offering proactive security measures as a vital line of defence. However, emerging technologies and trends like cloud services, mobile apps, and remote work created new vulnerabilities that cyberthreats can exploit. This requires additional security measures to mitigate the risks. This paper presents results of a systematic literature review that explored strategies for ISPs to help mitigate cybersecurity threats. The review found a comprehensive approach combining people, technology, and adherence to regulations. The study has implications for policymakers, who need to ensure relevant policies are in place, and for software/hardware vendors, who should incorporate appropriate countermeasures into system designs. ISPs also have an obligation to allocate sufficient funding to cybersecurity measures to protect organizational and individual data.
