Exploring IPS and IDS Approaches for Strengthening Security in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

At present, security in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has remained a persistent challenge since their inception. They are more likely to encounter various types of attacks that aim to manipulate or steal sensitive data and damage the entire network due to their natural features than other networks. Therefore, the continuous evolution of intrusion detection techniques is crucial, particularly given the critical applications of these networks, such as healthcare and the military. Therefore, WSNs require high security to protect privacy and confidential data, as well as ensure the accessibility of services. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) can play a fundamental role in detecting, alerting, and preventing cyber threats. In this paper, we present the architecture of WSN and different types of security threats; several security aspects in WSN are also highlighted, and the important role of IDPS (Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems) in the security of this network.
