Exploring factors influencing assistive device uptake among persons with physical and hearing impairments in the Ashanti region of Ghana

Abstract

PURPOSE: To explore factors influencing assistive device uptake among persons with physical and hearing impairments in the Ashanti region of Ghana. METHOD: This study used the qualitative study design going by the interpretive approach. Data was gathered through an in-depth interview using a semi-structured interview guide with 21 participants across five districts in Ashanti region using a convenience sampling. Interviews were recorded using a recorder, was transcribed verbatim and thematic analysis was used for the analysis. RESULTS: The study showed the desire for independence, improved communication and social inclusion were the key influences of assistive device use. Recommendations from healthcare professionals and peers are seen to encourage participants to adopt the device. However, unpleasant noise from hearing aids, stigma and barriers from the environment limited adoption or use of the device. Assistive devices enhanced mobility, participation and the quality of life. CONCLUSION: For an individual to accept to adopt an assistive device, there is the combination of personal, social and environmental factors. Promoting user-centred approaches, peer support, and addressing issues such as stigma and environmental barriers are crucial to improving adoption and sustained use of assistive devices.
