Evaluation of Climate-Resilient Building Strategies in Arid Regions for Adaptation in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

High temperatures in arid regions are an issue of great concern, as extreme heat can cause high mortality rates if not managedproperly. Researchers across the globe are searching for strategies to mitigate the effect of extreme heat in buildings and theenvironment in order to ensure users comfort using functional design and materials. Housing, described as a place of rest, shouldbe comfortable irrespective of climate; however inadequate climate resilient building designs could cause discomfort andincreased energy usage especially in arid regions where related studies are under-explored. The aim of the study is to evaluateclimate-resilient strategies for housing schemes in arid regions in order to propose strategies for Northern Nigeria. Six studieswere reviewed and selected based on their focus on case studies, location in arid regions, and availability of climate-resilientdesign strategies. The strategies were evaluated for applicability in Northern Nigeria using comparative evaluation. The findingsof the study highlight Nature-based solutions (like Green roofs, green walls, bio-receptive facades) and passive design strategies(like natural ventilation and shading devices) as climate-resilient strategies for buildings in regions with similar climaticconditions. The study serves as a guide in the Northern Nigeria region, for architects in designing buildings and retrofittingprojects; as well as government agencies, to inform policy on the context-based strategies to mitigate the effect of Climate,improve living conditions for its residents and make sustainable cities in the region.
