Evaluating the Impact of ACLS Post-Simulation Based Training on Nurses’ Knowledge and Skill Retention: Bridging the Gap

Abstract

Background: Simulation-based training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) isessential for preparing nurses to manage cardiac emergencies effectively. While itenhances immediate knowledge and skills, evidence shows significant deterioration overtime without reinforcement. This study aims to evaluate the impact of post-simulationACLS training on nurses’ knowledge and skill retention, addressing the gap betweeninitial training and sustained clinical competence. Objective: to evaluate theeffectiveness of simulation-based ACLS training on nurses’ knowledge and skill retentionand address gaps in long-term competency. Setting: the study was caried out in thetraining center of Najran General Hospital, which operates under the Ministry of Healthin Saudi Arabia. subject: A longitudinal prospective cohort of 135 registered nurses withrecent ACLS certification underwent simulation-based ACLS training. Tools:data werecollected using the following tools: Tool I: Registered Nurses' Knowledge RegardingAdvanced Cardiac Life Support – This tool was used to assess the theoretical knowledgeof nurses related to ACLS Tool II: Mega Code Performance Observational Checklist,this checklist was utilized to evaluate the practical performance of nurses duringsimulated ACLS scenarios.Results: Mean ACLS knowledge and skill scores declinedsignificantly over time (p < 0.05), with the largest drop observed at 9 months posttraining.Conclusions: The present study confirms that simulation-based training is aneffective clinical teaching strategy that significantly enhances nurses' knowledge and skillretention in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). The immersive and hands-on natureof simulation improves clinical competent and prepares nurses for high-pressure cardiacemergencies. Despite its effectiveness, ACLS knowledge and skill retention declinenotably by 6–9 months post-training. Therefore, simulation should not be a one-timeintervention; instead, regular refresher sessions are essential to maintain long-termretention knowledge and skills . Recommendations: Simulation-based ACLS trainingenhances nurses' knowledge and skill retention. Educational materials and progressive,scenario-based simulations should support continuous learning. Clinical practice shouldintegrate ongoing assessments, mentorship, and cost-effectiveness analysis. Futurestudies should examine simulation modalities, real-world performance,.
