Engaging Stakeholders: Best Management Practices for Transformative Change in Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Abstract

This study presents a participatory evaluation of local stakeholders' readiness to collaborate in adopting Best Management Practices (BMPs) within Sudan's Gezira Scheme. Emphasizing inclusive engagement, the study developed a conceptual framework tailored to local farming, policy, and institutional contexts. Using qualitative and participatory scoring tools, stakeholders’ capacities were assessed across environmental, organizational, and economic domains. Results indicate strong community interest in sustainable practices particularly soil management and climate resilience while highlighting gaps in economic security and policy compliance. Based on these findings, key recommendations include enhancing training and knowledge exchange, adopting efficient water and energy technologies, and fostering inclusive governance mechanisms. These insights provide a foundation for sustainable transformation in the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus.
