Empirical Survey on the Negative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Book Publishing in Nigeria

Abstract

Book publishing which is the fulcrum of this research is one of the six classifications of copyright. With the use of Artificial Intelligence as a means of developing new technologies for protecting Intellectual Property, such as digital watermarking and block-chain technology, it is now easy for online publishers to access other people’s work to pirate, plagiarize and do other forms of infringement without having the hard copy or physically present in the territorial jurisdiction of the copyright owner. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is interconnected with every field of study in the legal profession such as data protection law, health law, taxation law, e-commerce law, corporate law among others. This research was necessitated by the negative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on book publishing in Nigeria despite the existence of copyright legislation. The research examined the regulatory framework on book publishing in Nigeria, from the perspective of legibility of the AI in the Nigerian Copyright Act. Descriptive Analysis, Chi-square test was done on responses from both authors and publishers using IBM SPSS software. Findings from this research revealed that book publishing in Nigeria faces myriad problems out of which advent of AI played a serious role, thus preventing the industry from attaining the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. In the end, stakeholders, through an empirical research a proposed an enactment of a bill titled; "The Nigerian Book Publishing Bill" to achieve a holistic approach to solving the multidimensional problems digital piracy and plagiarism with the aid of artificial intelligence mechanism.
