Emended description and phylogenetic placement of Dermatosorus schoenoplecti (Ustilaginales)

Abstract

The smut fungal genus Dermatosorus (Ustilaginales, Anthracoideaceae) currently contains six species that infect ovaries of host plants in the family Cyperaceae (from the so called Abildgaardieae—Eleocharideae—Fuireneae—Cypereae-Clade). This genus is poorly known and sparsely represented in nucleotide databases. An emended description, illustration and phylogenetic placement of the rare species Dermatosorus schoenoplecti collected in Cameroon are provided. In addition, the global diversity and distribution of Dermatosorus species are reviewed.
