Effect of Technology Enhanced Nursing Intervention on Improving Self-Care Practices among Women with a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common infectious disease of the female reproductive tract. It causes abdominal/pelvic pain and tenderness of the uterus, cervix, or adnexa on physical exam. In recent years, its incidence has gradually increased yearly due to numerous factors, including sexually transmitted diseases and intrauterine operations. Purpose: To assess the effect of technology-enhanced nursing intervention on self-care practices among women with pelvic inflammatory disease. Design: A quasi-experimental research design. Setting: The study was conducted at the Maternal and Child Health Centers (Quibli and Bahari) at Shebin El-Kom in Menoufia Governorate. Sampling was 108 married women diagnosed with mild to moderate PID. Five instruments were used ( a structured interviewing questionnaire, self-reported hygienic practices sheet, knowledge assessment instrument, A designed interviewing schedule and technology acceptance questionnaire). Results showed statistically significance differences between the studied groups post intervention regarding knowledge about PID with 79.6% for the experimental group compared to 14.8% in the control group and performance level of self-care practices and 83.3% - 29.6% and 79.6% - 31.5% respectively at post and follow up intervention stages. Also, acceptance level of technology application about7 5.9% - 33.4% respectively. Conclusion: It was concluded that technology enhanced health nursing intervention regarding PID had a positive effect on women's knowledge, scope of practices, revealed symptoms and enhanced technology acceptance application among studied women post intervention. Recommendations: Technology-enhanced nursing interventions should be used to enhance self-care practices of women having PID.
