Effect of L- Arginine Supplementation on Some Blood Parameters, Hormones Metabolites and Immunoglobulin Concentration of Suckling Friesian Calves

Abstract

This study sought to determine the impact of supplementing with L-arginine on some blood parameters, hormones metabolites and immunoglobulin concentration of suckling Friesian calves. Twenty-four newborn Friesian calves were used in this study, which extended from birth until weaning. Blood samples were collected to estimate the haematological components, along with some chemical components in blood plasma. Haematological data showed that the treated groups (G2 and G3) had significantly greater levels red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), packed cell volume (PCV%) value (P<0.01), haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, and neutrophils percentage (P<0.05) than the control group (G1). Calves in G2 and G3 had considerably (P<0.01) higher levels of total proteins, albumin, and globulin in their blood plasma than calves in G1 by about 14.32 and 15.61, 12.87 and 8.31 and 15.67 and 22.39%, respectively. On the other hand, G2 and G3 had considerably lower (P<0.01) levels of total lipids, glucose, creatinine, and urea-N than G1 by about 19.92 and 22.99, 16.15 and 18.51, 19.87 and 21.47 and 17.31 and 20.61%, respectively. As well as, the studied hormones has improved in treated groups compared with the control group. The experimental results indicated that IGg was a significantly increased in treated groups and increased significantly with age. These findings suggest that L-arginine supplementation throughout the suckling period led to improve the immunoglobulin concentration of Friesian calves without having a negative impact on blood haematological and biochemical parameters during the suckling period.
