Educational intervention for nurses to implement patient and family centered care in peri-operative context at the hospital setting

Abstract

The paper described the development of an educational intervention for nurses in Northern Ghana to implement Patient and Family Centered Care in the peri-operative context. The development of the educational intervention was guided by the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) instructional system design model which was reviewed by eight expert members from both South Africa and Ghana. A validated tool was used to provide feedback, which was incorporated into the final educational intervention. The educational intervention developed addressed the need for nurses to understand the concept of PFCC and the core components of PFCC, the benefits of implementing PFCC relating to nurses, patients and families, and the healthcare system. The role of the patients and families during PFCC namely physical, relational, and psycho-social roles were included as topics in the educational intervention. The barriers to the implementation of PFCC namely, patients and families, healthcare system, nurses, and managerial barriers were also dealt with in the educational intervention. Implementation of the educational intervention as a pilot amongst nurses in the peri-operative context revealed that educational intervention on PFCC implementation in the peri-operative context could improve the knowledge and skills of nurses to implement PFCC in a peri-operative context. Thus, the educational intervention developed for nurses to implement PFCC in the peri-operative context in hospitals in Northern Ghana will be beneficial in ensuring that there is a collaboration between the nurses, patients, and families to enhance PFCC in the peri-operative context.
