Editorial: Traditional knowledge and rural livelihoods and practices for nature conservation and environmental sustainability

Abstract

Traditional knowledge systems and practices of local communities play a significant role in shaping the sustainable management of biodiversity and the environment in general. Today, as climate change ravages the ecological balance of the biosphere, traditional knowledge systems, such as indigenous beliefs, cultural practices, rural livelihood strategies, and agronomic practices, function as adaptive socio-ecological networks, mitigating climate change and regulating the use of natural resources. These elements enable local communities to effectively manage biodiversity and navigate environmental variabilities. Yet, these efficient traditional systems have been marginalised in contemporary conservation discourse, and their integration into nature conservation and environmental sustainability frameworks has not materialised. This special issue presents case studies from various parts of the world as evidence of the resilience nature of traditional knowledge systems of rural communities in sustainably managing biodiversity and the environment. It offers a comprehensive approach to synergising the sustainable insights from traditional systems of managing biodiversity with scientific knowledge. This editorial presents a scholarly summary of six interdisciplinary studies on how rural communities have intelligently leveraged traditional knowledge in maintaining the resilience of their ecosystems, ensuring a respectful, reciprocal, and harmonious human-environment relationship as innovative strategies in mitigating the ravaging effects of climate change. They collectively underscore the dynamics of knowledge transmission in community-driven nature management and ecological adaptation strategies, which are critical issues of concern in understanding human dynamics broadly.Molmou et al. critically examine how useful wild plants continue to support rural livelihoods in Guinea by offering medicinal, nutritional, and religious benefits. It discusses how the 399 documented plant species have been managed through rich ethnobotanical knowledge across four geographical regions. It highlights how ethnobotanical knowledge, such as plant processing and harvesting practices as well as vernacular naming of plants, has effectively ensured the conservation of the plant species with 28 globally threatened species, and urgently needs to be documented. It offers a compelling case study on the urgency of integrating traditional plant knowledge, which offers culturally sensitive conservation strategies into modern plant conservation planning. The study empirically exemplifies how ethnobotanical knowledge underpins socio-ecological resilience and rural well-being.Area, Ghana, revealing how traditional cultural instruments such as deep reverence for totemic animals, observance of sacred days, as well as land-water practices function as regulatory institutions for maintaining biodiversity conservation and resilience. The study demonstrates that ecological stewardship is inseparable from cultural and ethical norms, emphasising that sustainability emerges from both social and ecological processes. Hence, modern biodiversity strategies must factor in the science that undergirds these traditional cultural instruments and synergise them for holistic nature conservation.Chamasula and Rabumbulu's case study of climate-induced land degradation in Balaka, Malawi, further the argument for an integrated approach to managing biodiversity by synergising indigenous and scientific knowledge systems. The study highlights the inadequacies of scientific land management practices as inaccessible and poorly suited to local contexts. The study argues that indigenous knowledge and land adaptation strategies that rely on local indicators of crop failure, changes in vegetation, loss of soil fertility, crop rotation, and soil conservation practices are grounded in experiential knowledge through long periods of observation by rural Malawian farmers and, as such, are a valid form of empirical science. Hence, the study proposes co-knowledge production pathways where indigenous indicators are factored into modern climate-adaptive land management strategies in Malawi.Makwinja and Mkhwimba analyse the impacts of extensive logging in Malawi's Dzalanyama Forest Reserve. The study demonstrates that a synergy of community perspectives and ecological science aids in understanding how governance failures, corruption, energy poverty, and weak enforcement of compliance laws in tree logging contribute to their ravaging effects on rural livelihoods. Through the application of the water-energy-biota-soil (WEBS) nexus framework, the authors show that extensive logging, which defeats traditional harvesting protocols that focus on sustainability, reduces tree species diversity and scraps the livelihood support of rural communities. It calls for a government-community management and oversight framework that pivots on a synergistic forest conservation strategy of indigenous and scientific knowledge systems. It argues that discourses on environmental sustainability and nature conservation are influenced by governance, economic structures, and community agency.Quarshie and Poku's study demonstrates that indigenous knowledge is encoded in symbols, language, and cultural narratives and is not just limited to cultural practices. It engages in a conceptual analysis of Akan and Ewe proverbs in Ghana and how they are used as vehicles for intergenerational transmission of environmental ethics, adaptive reasoning, and stewardship from the elderly class in the society to the youth. It underscores the urgent need to innovatively adapt environmental proverbs as a medium for ensuring cultural cognition and promoting ideals of sustainability in the younger generation.Finally, Magoma and Pikirayi's ethnographic and historical study of Venda hydrological knowledge in northern South Africa explores how traditional belief systems are resilient in protecting water resources from overexploitation. The study shows how springs (zwisima and zwipise) in the study area are regarded as sacred sites protected by age-long taboo systems, myths, and other forms of cultural practices. It demonstrates that the indigenous worldview is a valid traditional conservation strategy that must be integrated into contemporary water management strategies to ensure hydrological sustainability.The scholarly tapestry of the six articles in this special issue provides three key insights. First, traditional knowledge functions as a complex adaptive system shaped by interactions between culture, ecology, rural livelihoods, and governance. Second, contemporary nature conservation strategies often marginalise or tokenise the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies that have long protected nature. The exclusion of indigenous knowledge has resulted in an environmental crisis in contemporary societies. Third, traditional knowledge, rural livelihoods, and practices offer practical and ethical frameworks for addressing contemporary environmental crisis and uncertainty. This special issue implores conservationists to move beyond the symbolic, rhetorical, and tokenistic consideration of indigenous knowledge as a peripheral pathway towards grounding it as a core component in nature conservation planning and management issues (Singh-Pillay & Madlala, 2026). Conservation planners must co-design conservation and adaptation strategies with indigenous people whose livelihood practices and cultural institutions have constantly revered and respected nature, treated her with care, and maintained a reciprocal relationship (Cano et al., 2026;Baron-Aguilar et al., 2025). Traditional knowledge in nature conservation is a valid science and should be synergised with modern scientific knowledge to provide a more holistic pathway for the effective management of biodiversity (Nxele, 2026;Parvin & Begum, 2025;Ijatuyi et al., 2025). Nature conservation strategies can only be powerful in addressing today's environmental crisis if contemporary societies return to ancestral wisdom and learn from indigenous societies (Adom, 2018;Lorz & Trueman, 2025), who have never severed their respectful, reciprocal, and harmonious relationship with nature.
