Economic importance of Cysticercus tenuicollis infection of sheep and goats in the Northwest region of Cameroon

Abstract

Small ruminant husbandry plays major socio-cultural and economic roles in the livelihood of communities in Cameroon. Cysticercus tenuicollis cysticercosis is prevalent in small ruminants and has been implicated in organ condemnations during meat inspection in parts of the country. There is dearth of information on the economic losses due to the disease at farm level during husbandry and abattoir from organ condemnations. This study was carried out to estimate economic losses due to C. tenuicollis cysticercosis in sheep and goats in Bamenda, the Northwest region of Cameroon. The direct loss was estimated based on the annual slaughter rate, average local market prices and frequencies of cysts on rejected organs and carcass. The indirect losses were obtained from costs of elements in the small ruminant sector due to C. tenuicollis infection. The losses were calculated in terms of the local currency; Franc de la Communauté Financière Africaine (FCFA). Overall, an annual financial loss of 3,960,161FCFA being 1,562,792FCFA for goats and 2,408,040FCFA for sheep based on retrospective slaughter rates (2017 to 2023) was estimated. La cysticercose à Cysticercus tenuicollis est répandue chez les petits ruminants et a été impliquée dans la condamnation d’organes lors des inspections de viande dans certaines régions du pays. Il existe un manque d’informations sur les pertes économiques dues à la maladie au niveau des exploitations agricoles pendant l’élevage et dans les abattoirs en raison de la condamnation d’organes. Cette étude a été menée afin d’estimer les pertes économiques dues à la cysticercose à C. tenuicollis chez les moutons et les chèvres à Bamenda, dans la région nord-ouest du Cameroun. Les pertes directes ont été estimées sur la base du taux d’abattage annuel, des prix moyens sur le marché local et de la fréquence des kystes sur les organes et les carcasses rejetés. Les pertes indirectes ont été calculées à partir des coûts des éléments du secteur des petits ruminants dus à l’infection à C. tenuicollis. Les pertes ont été calculées en monnaie locale, le franc de la Communauté financière africaine (FCFA). Au total, une perte financière annuelle de 3 960 161 FCFA (1 562 792 FCFA pour les chèvres et 2 408 040 FCFA pour les moutons) a été estimée sur la base des taux d’abattage rétrospectifs (2017 à 2023). Cependant, la présente étude a révélé une perte économique totale de 9 457 490 FCFA, correspondant à 942 490 FCFA de pertes financières directes et 8 515 000 FCFA de pertes économiques indirectes dans le secteur des petits ruminants. Les pertes subies étaient des pertes directes (10 %) et indirectes (90 %), ce qui a donné des pertes cumulées de 5 321 375 FCFA pour les chèvres et de 4 036 125 FCFA pour les moutons. L’étude a montré que C. tenuicollis est prévalent chez les moutons et les chèvres dans la métropole de Bamenda. L’étude a déterminé les pertes économiques sur la base de la condamnation et du rejet des organes kystiques et des activités liées aux pratiques d’élevage, aux soins vétérinaires, à l’alimentation, à la croissance et à la production dues à C. tenuicollis dans le secteur ovin et caprin.
