There is an increased need in higher education for student participation and student voices in varied aspects of teaching and learning and an increased demand from students to be part of this work. As such, the Digital Open Textbooks for Development project (DOT4D) partnered with students from UCT within its open textbook initiative, through designing a Student Fellowship Programme, in order to explore student-centred approaches, create student-led spaces, and develop innovative ways to engage with students around open education in higher education.This presentation, shared as part of the Designing for Social Justice Partnership (DSJP) Programme's Roundtable event in October 2025, provides insight into the fellowship programme and shares student perspectives on open education activity for social justice in higher education; highlighting student-centred approaches and collaborative practices; foregrounding efforts to promote student voice, student partnership and student advocacy; and showcasing student-centered authorship.
