Disaster preparedness at the University of Dar es Salaam Library, Tanzania

Abstract

Disaster management is important for sustainable access of library resources. This article presents a study that has assessed disaster preparedness at the University of Dar es Salaam library in Tanzania. The study employed a case study research design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect and analyze data. The study’s findings indicate that a majority of the participants were aware of potential disasters that could adversely affect the library’s resources. However, the research suggests that despite this knowledge, most respondents were not familiar with the crucial factors involved in effectively managing such disasters. Additionally, the findings reveal that many participants lack the necessary knowledge and skills to handle these situations. Along with the inadequate disaster management equipment and other challenges like a lack of training on disaster management, the library’s resources are at risk if a disaster were to occur. Overall, the study’s findings demonstrate that the library is not adequately prepared to handle potential disasters, which could potentially impact its ability to provide services to its users. Therefore, it is crucial for the library to allocate sufficient resources for effective disaster management to ensure the sustainable provision of services to its users.
