Detection of changes in land use and land cover by globeland 30. Case: Talassemtane National Park, morocco

Abstract

Detecting changes in land use and land cover plays an important role in monitoring the regressive or progressive dynamics of forested areas. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing enable these changes to be monitored and detected by using land cover maps generated for multiple dates. Several institutions are involved in the production of such products. The GlobeLand30 (GL30) map, the first 30 m resolution land cover map is one of these products. We used GL30 for the Talassemtane National Park (TNP) area and for different time periods: 2000, 2010, and 2020. This allowed us to generate land use and land cover maps for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020, and also to produce maps of changes in land use and land cover between 2000-2010 and 2010-2020. The results showed a decline in forest area, estimated at 4039 ha during the period 2000-2010, and 442.62 ha during the period 2010-2020. This study will be used for research studies in the TNP area, particularly for monitoring deforestation.
