Delineation of depth to some aquifers of Ogbomoso, Southwestern Nigeria

Abstract

The study employs vertical electrical sounding (VES) using the Schlumberger configuration to delineate the depth of some aquifers of Ogbomoso, Southwestern Nigeria. By analysing the geoelectric layers, the research aims to identify the location and depth of potential groundwater reservoirs, providing valuable insights for sustainable water resource management in the region. A geophysical investigation was conducted to delineate aquifer depth and assess groundwater potential across five local government areas in Ogbomoso, Southwestern Nigeria. Electrical resistivity soundings were performed at ten locations within each local government area, employing the ABEM Terrameter for vertical electrical sounding (VES). Data acquisition followed the Schlumberger array configuration, and interpretation was carried out using the WINRESIST software. The results provided stratigraphic insights, including layer thicknesses, depths, and resistivity values, revealing subsurface models comprising three to four geoelectric layers. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the hydrogeological framework of the study region. The results further show two categories of aquifers: the deep aquifers with resistivity less than 400 Ωm and shallow aquifers with resistivity greater than 400 Ωm. The deep aquifer was found at 29 locations, and shallow aquifers were found at 21 locations. The results could be additional information for respective experts for their problem-solving, such as information on groundwater pollution, leachate, underground, and water supply sources.
