Deciphering the Influence of Human Behavior on Cybersecurity Risks: An In-depth Review of Amplification and Mitigation Factors

Abstract

Human behavior remains one of the most critical yet unpredictable elements influencing cyber security risks. This review paper explores how individual and organizational behaviors can either amplify or mitigate cyber threats. Drawing upon interdisciplinary literature from cyber security, psychology and organizational studies, the paper identifies key behavioral patterns such as negligence, social engineering susceptibility and poor security culture that exacerbate vulnerabilities. Conversely, it examines how awareness training, user-centered design, behavioral monitoring and positive reinforcement mechanisms contribute to risk mitigation. By synthesizing current research and case studies, the paper provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the behavioral dynamics in cyber security, offering practical recommendations for policymakers, system designers and security professionals aiming to strengthen humancentric security strategies.
