Abstract This dataset contains species-level plant longevity records compiled from multiple published sources, together with taxonomic identifiers and belowground/aboveground life-history trait classifications used to assign each species to a Belowground Persistence Type (BPT). BPT is a hierarchical classification based on woodiness x regeneration strategy (Klimesova et al. 2025), used alongside simpler life-history contrasts (annual vs perennial, herbaceous vs woody, seeder vs resprouter, nonclonal vs clonal) to explain variation in plant longevity. This dataset is the input dataset for the phylogenetic mixed-model and PGLS analyses described in the associated manuscript and repository. The code is also available through GitHub: https://github.com/karlandraczek/Laughlin_PlantLongevity_BPT
