Coordination polymers of 3-(4-pyridyl)benzoic acid and copper(II): activation and reactivity

Abstract

Two coordination polymers {[Cu(34pba) 2 ]·DMF} n ( 1 ) and {[CuCl(H34pba) 2 ] . Cl . solvent} n ( 2 ) (where 34pba is 3-(4-pyridyl)benzoate) were prepared by varying the temperature and amount of acid in the synthesis. 1 was activated by heating under vacuum or by solvent displacement in methanol to form two different desolvated phases, 1d1 and 1d2 . The copper-34pba network remains unchanged in 1 , 1d1 and 1d2 but the layers of the framework can slide to nest into one another on desolvation. The activated phases take up HCl, forming the same phase. Compound 2 is formed when the amount of acid is increased in the synthesis mixture. This solvated salt crystallizes to form two independent channels, one containing the uncoordinated chloride anion and a larger channel containing solvent.
