Contribution of Nsong’s endogenous knowledge to the conservation of natural ecosystems in the Kwilu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo ABSTRACT Study Context: Preserving natural ecosystems and biodiversity is a major concern in the context of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This study focuses on cultural integration in the conservation of these vital resources, highlighting the role of the endogenous knowledge of the Basongo in traditional Nsong society. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to analyze the contribution of Basongo's endogenous knowledge to the conservation of natural ecosystems and biodiversity in traditional Nsong society. It aims to understand how these traditional knowledge and skills are used to preserve the environment and promote sustainability. Methodology and Results: Cultural elements, including Nsong's traditional knowledge and skills, were gathered from a variety of sources, including the writings of Koni & Bostoen and Djo Kapay, as well as interviews, focus groups, and discussions with custodians of traditional knowledge. Additional information was collected in the field, in villages in the Bulungu territory and in the cities of Kikwit and Bulungu, between 2021 and 2023. Several prohibitions and traditional practices of the Nsong were identified, with translations into French and explanatory comments. Natural ecosystems and biodiversity were observed to be well preserved, particularly under the authority of customary chiefs, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of Basongo's endogenous knowledge in environmental conservation. Conclusion and Applications of Results: This study highlights the importance of Basongo's endogenous knowledge in the conservation of natural ecosystems and biodiversity in traditional Nsong society. Traditional practices and prohibitions played a crucial role in environmental preservation, offering valuable perspectives for sustainable conservation in the region. The findings of this study can be used to inform conservation policies, sustainable development programs, and community initiatives aimed at preserving natural ecosystems and biodiversity in the DRC. By integrating Basongo's endogenous knowledge into conservation efforts, it is possible to promote a more holistic and culturally adapted approach to environmental preservation.
