Connectivity Probability Analysis for VANETs with Big Vehicle Shadowing

Abstract

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) have become a popular research area in recent years, particularly in vehicle-to-everything (V2V) applications for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, big vehicles can cause communication disruptions due to their size and position on the road, leading to unreliable V2V applications. In this paper, we propose a solution to the problem of broken communication links caused by big vehicle shadowing, by establishing connectivity between two clusters of vehicles disconnected by the big vehicles on a lane through communicating clusters on the adjacent lane. We analyse the connectivity probability in a two-way road section and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed solution. The proposed solution can enhance the performance of V2V applications. Simulated and numerical results indicate that, adjacent lane vehicle cluster on the road in a free-flow traffic can maintain the communications link shadowed by big vehicles.
