To address the growth of energy consumption and electrical grids —particularly Distribution networks are encountering various challenges, as they have grown increasingly intricate and widespread in recent times, it is becoming harder to keep them stable and reliable. Many solutions have been suggested to control abnormal electrical currents, Fault current limiters (FCLs) have become a useful and promising solution. For either interrupting or limiting abnormal electrical acceptable levels. So, this comprehensive review aims to show the integration of fault current limiters in distribution networks, including a survey of different FCL types. It also summarizes the optimization techniques used to effectively deploy both FCLs and DGs. Furthermore, the paper talks about the design variables for fault current limiters and the protection coordination if they are integrated with the network.
