Comparative Assessment of Hydrogen Production from Wind and Solar Resources for Electricity Generation in Sokoto, Nigeria

Abstract

This paper presents the energy assessment of hydrogen production with wind and solar resources in the city of Sokoto, Nigeria. Ten selected wind turbines and fourteen selected solar photovoltaic (SPV) types from different manufacturers were employed to determine the optimum turbine and solar module. Energy assessment of hydrogen production was then performed using the wind turbine and solar module with the highest capacity factor. Relevant findings show that SPV could generate 26.906GWh of electricity per annum with a hydrogen production of 70.18tons/annum while 939.95MWh of electricity per annum could be realized from WECS with a hydrogen production of 17.33tons/annum. Out of the ten wind turbines and fourteen SPV modules from different manufacturers that was used for the study, turbine index, T3 (ENERCON E-40) and module index, T3 (Panasonic solar) provided the best value of capacity factor in the study location. SPV presents a higher capacity factor than wind. 75.5% more hydrogen could be realized from SPV than Wind in Sokoto.
