Cistus ladanifer L., a Mediterranean shrub traditionally used in folk medicine for treating respiratory, gastrointestinal, and skin ailments, is now gaining scientific attention for its broader therapeutic and industrial potential. This review offers an updated synthesis of the literature published between 2020 and 2024, covering traditional use, chemical composition, and biological properties. Phytochemical investigations have revealed that C. ladanifer is rich in secondary metabolites, particularly phenolic acids, flavonoids, and terpenes both monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes derivatives which are responsible for its potent antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Additionally, C. ladanifer shows significant promise in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases among others. These bioactive properties make C. ladanifer a promising candidate for pharmaceutical and therapeutic development. Despite its demonstrated potential, gaps remain in clinical validation and mechanistic studies. Future research should aim to explore its pharmacological applications more deeply and establish pathways for its sustainable and evidence-based integration into health-related industries.
