Challenges in Green Logistics Management

Abstract

Reducing harmful effects on the environment is one of the priorities of sustainable development goals. The major objectives of this chapter are to study the challenges of green logistics management. The study is qualitative, which employs secondary sources of data. The data for the study were sourced from relevant articles published from 2015–2024. The data of the study were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that internal barriers (problems with management; absence of moral and ethical standards; risk of return on investment; lack of employee involvement, etc.) and external barriers (the market structure; lack of bank loans; the inadequacy of government regulations; the limited number of producers of sustainable products, etc.) are the major challenges of green logistics management. However, advancements in green transport technology (LNG trucks, electric power trucks), designing green logistics strategies (green decision support systems, green transportation strategies, etc.), sustainable business models, and integrating green logistics strategies in logistics service providers (1PL, 2PL, 3PL), among others, are the main strategies for green logistic strategies. Moreover, utilizing alternative fuels, utilizing energy-efficient machinery, creating plans for alternate energy use in businesses, and cooperating in environmental management with partners are the main practices of green logistics.
