The production of biofuels is an important strategy for decarbonizing transportation sectors such as shipping and aviation. In general, the conversion of biomass to biofuel has been achieved via different routes, which can be divided into thermochemical, chemical and biochemical methods. Various technologies have been developed for these methods. In this chapter, case studies of successful biofuel projects utilizing each of these conversion routes are reviewed and the different technologies evaluated according to their challenges, advantages, status, and environmental impact. For each case study, a technical description and process scheme are provided, followed by a brief historical overview of the project. Finally, the technology readiness level of each case study is evaluated and the lessons learned summarized.
